This week, we’re shining the spotlight on someone who quietly powers much of what keeps Eltham Rugby running: our long-serving Treasurer, Sylvia Metcalfe.
Sylvia has held the role since 2020, stepping in just as COVID was disrupting community sport across the country. With a strong family connection to the club — her sons have played across multiple junior teams, her husband Tim is President, and her son Mark served as Facilities Manager — Sylvia saw a chance to contribute in her own way after retiring from work.
“I felt I couldn’t be involved too much while I was working, but when I retired I had more time. Although I don’t have accounting skills, I do pay attention to detail, so I thought I could help by being Treasurer.”
Her role extends far beyond just keeping track of the books. Sylvia manages full bookkeeping, oversees budgeting, and ensures the club makes smart decisions about where funds are spent.
“It’s not just tracking money in and out. You need to anticipate costs, plan for key expenses, and make calls on what’s worth investing in, all while keeping the club financially healthy and running smoothly.”
Sylvia has also played a key role in delivering major infrastructure upgrades, securing vital grant funding and coordinating with Council and suppliers:
-
A $10,000 Federal Government grant supported the club kitchen renovation, alongside contributions from the club ($8,700) and Council ($16,000).
-
The bar upgrade and parquetry floor polishing were funded by the club ($22,000) and Council ($11,000), with a Bendigo Bank grant supporting a new bar fridge.
-
Additional Council contributions covered new vinyl flooring and an upgraded hot water basin in the accessible toilet.
-
Sylvia worked closely with Council and suppliers to help plan and deliver these projects.
She also helps organise the club’s annual Christmas Tree fundraiser, one of our most important community events and sources of revenue.
Despite taking on the Treasurer role during a challenging period, Sylvia says the rewards are worth it.
“What I love most is the people and the sense of community. There’s a shared passion for rugby that brings everyone together.”
And her message to others thinking about getting involved?
“It’s so worthwhile helping out in a community club. There are so many ways to contribute — it doesn’t have to be hard. Just let us know how you’d like to help. And with the committee, the more people involved, the easier it is for everyone. You’ll be heard, your ideas are welcome, and we’re a really nice bunch. Monthly meetings can even be virtual if that helps.”
Thank you Sylvia, for your leadership, attention to detail, and the lasting impact you’ve made on the future of our club. We are incredibly lucky to have you.
