๐Ÿ‰ Volunteer Spotlight โ€“ Meet Nick Bursey

This week we shine the spotlight on one of our newest volunteers, Nick Bursey, who has recently joined Eltham Rugby as our Junior Girls Coach.

Although heโ€™s only been back with the club for a month, Nickโ€™s connection to Eltham Rugby goes way back โ€” he first played here as a kid in the late โ€™80s! After several years living in California, where he coached middle- and high-school girls with the Pleasanton Cavaliers and assisted at the California Grizzlies Rugby Academy, Nick has returned home and jumped straight back into rugby life.

โ€œIโ€™ve got three daughters, and I love seeing girls do things many boys their age (and older) wouldnโ€™t even try,โ€ Nick says. โ€œGuiding them through rugby and life skills they can build on as they grow is the best part of coaching.โ€

While heโ€™s only just begun his Eltham chapter, Nick is looking forward to creating plenty of memorable moments with the girls and helping build confidence through rugby.

Away from the field, Nick works for a large technology company โ€” though he jokes that he โ€œcanโ€™t stand where technology is taking us,โ€ which is exactly why he loves coaching: โ€œNo iPhones, no AI, just hard work.โ€

When heโ€™s not on the pitch, youโ€™ll find him watching rugby, riding his motorbike or tinkering with old cars. His favourite team? The Australian Womenโ€™s 7s โ€” their energy and flair make every game electric.

Nick draws his inspiration from his daughters, watching them grow and develop their own skills, friendships and values. And when it comes to match-day rituals, he believes in celebrating effort:

โ€œI love doing a jersey presentation. The kids earn their jerseys and deserve to be recognised for their hard work.โ€

If Nick could recruit one famous volunteer, it would be Charlotte Caslick, โ€œan amazing human and inspiration to young women worldwide.โ€

Finally, his message to anyone thinking about getting involved at Eltham Rugby is simple:

โ€œGive it a go. Rugby is the most inclusive, family-oriented and underrated sport youโ€™ll find. Eltham Rugby has always been a fantastic example of an extended family โ€” and weโ€™d love more people to be part of it.โ€

Welcome back to the Eltham family, Nick โ€” weโ€™re lucky to have you guiding the next generation of girlsโ€™ rugby stars! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ–ค
