Volunteer Spotlight: Ari Su’a

Coach, U12s and Assistant Coach, Seniors

If you’ve ever watched the U12s in action, chances are you’ve seen Ari Su’a right in the thick of it — energising the kids, laying out cones, and offering calm words of encouragement. Since joining the club in 2021, Ari has brought an infectious passion for the game and a deep commitment to helping kids grow both on and off the field.

From Player to Coach

A lifelong union player, Ari and his family were drawn to Eltham Rugby when they moved to the area in search of a club for their sons, Eli and Harvey.

“We were looking for a club where our boys could start playing, and Eltham made them feel so welcome. I was keen to give back — and volunteering was also a way to spend more time with my boys and their teammates.”

Since then, Ari has taken on the roles of U12s Coach and Assistant Coach for the Seniors, investing countless hours into both junior and senior development.

A Passion for Development

Ari doesn’t just volunteer for his kids’ team — he’s committed to leaving the club stronger and better than when he started. Whether it’s helping rebuild the Seniors team, mentoring younger players, or even stepping onto the field for the occasional Masters match, Ari leads by example and gives his all.

For Ari, coaching is about more than drills and game days.

“It’s so rewarding watching the kids develop their skills, confidence and commitment year on year.”

Ari is hands-on throughout the week. He spends a couple of hours each week designing drills, watching games back to analyse what worked and what needs extra attention in training sessions, and works with Rob to identify specific focus areas for each player to ensure they can all reach their full potential. That behind-the-scenes effort gives every kid the best chance to grow.

“There’s something special about starting from scratch and seeing how far these lads will go.”

Memories and Milestones

One of Ari’s standout memories is watching a player finally master a skill they’ve struggled with:

“You know that kid has learnt something about themselves in that moment — and they’re rightfully proud.”

Another unforgettable experience was sharing the field with three generations of his family when his dad — a talented coach himself — came over from New Zealand to help run a session.

Match Day Vibes and Favourite Teams

Match day starts early in the Su’a household, complete with coffee, double (and triple) checks, and pump-up tunes in the car. Then it’s time to warm up the kids and send them out feeling like champions.

As for team allegiance:

“The All Blacks, obviously. And as a parent as well as a coach, I have to say whatever team my kids are playing in.”

And who would Ari love to recruit as a volunteer?

“Dan Carter. He’s overcome adversity and would bring lessons in mental toughness, not just physical skill.”

Why Volunteer?

Ari’s advice is simple:

“Do it! It’s really rewarding, everyone is friendly and welcoming, and it’s a great community to be part of.”

Ari brings energy, thoughtfulness and a deep love for the game to every session. We’re so lucky to have him at Eltham Rugby Club. Thanks, Ari, for leading with purpose and heart.
