Volunteer Spotlight: Rob Sprackman

Assistant Coach, U12s

If you’ve spent any time around the U12s this season, you’ll know the calm, steady presence of assistant coach Rob Sprackman. Whether he’s rallying the boys for warm-up, planning a weekend away, or welcoming new families to the fold, Rob is a vital part of the fabric at Eltham Rugby Club.

From South Africa to Eltham

Rob and his wife Izy moved to Australia in 2007. When their son Jonny showed an early love for rugby, Rob was thrilled to discover a welcoming junior club right on their doorstep. A lifelong player and passionate Springbok supporter, he instantly felt at home.

“Wherever you are in the world, you can walk into a rugby club and be made to feel like you’ve found a new family.”

Since 2019, Rob has been giving back to that family. He started with the U6s and now supports the U12s, always doing much more behind the scenes than many realise.

Making a Difference

For Rob, rugby is about more than just the game. It’s about building a community.

“Watching the kids grow not just as players, but as humans—that’s what it’s all about.”

He loves seeing the boys form genuine friendships, dig deep during tough matches, and celebrate the victories they’ve earned through hard work. Off the field, Rob quietly checks in with parents, celebrates player milestones, and works hard to keep the team spirit strong.

He’s also the organiser behind many of the club’s favourite moments. From team lunches and family dinners to an epic end-of-season weekend away and even a coaches trip to Hamilton Island, Rob brings people together with warmth and enthusiasm.

“The bond the families have built over the years is something really special, and they’re quite the volunteer army!

One of Rob’s most humbling experiences came last season, when he received handwritten thank you cards from the boys.

“It’s unbelievably moving to know you’re making a difference in a young person’s life.

Match Day Rituals and Favourite Teams

Rob is all about preparation. Clothes are laid out the night before, Jonny’s kit bag is triple checked, coffee is packed, and pump-up tunes play in the car on the way to the ground.

“The Springboks, of course. There’s certainly some healthy rivalry between Ari and me on that point! One of the things I love about coaching is also that I get to spend time with my son, so of course, I have to say his team is my favourite.

Who Would He Recruit?

If Rob could bring one famous face into the Eltham volunteer crew, it would be:

“Rassie Erasmus, Springboks Coach. His ability to unite a nation through sport is inspiring… and we won the World Cup, so he probably knows what he’s doing!”

Off the Field

When Rob isn’t coaching, he runs his own electrical and fire safety business. He enjoys fishing with Jonny and restoring classic cars in his spare time.

Why Volunteer?

Rob’s message to anyone considering volunteering is simple:

“Just give it a try. No matter how much or little time you have, there’s going to be something you can contribute and you aren’t locked in so don’t be commitment shy 😊. The club is completely reliant on volunteers and it’s a great way to meet new people, try your hand at something different and be a part of an establishment that’s been an Eltham icon for decades. The ‘giver’s high’ is real, people!

Rob has a rare gift for making people feel welcome, included and valued. His generosity, good humour and community spirit are a huge part of what makes Eltham Rugby Club such a great place to be. Thanks, Rob – you’re a legend.
