Few people embody the spirit of Eltham Rugby quite like Shane Slater. As a player, coach, volunteer and long-serving committee member, Shane has given more than three decades of service to the club — and this year marks his 10th year on the committee, heading into his 11th.
Shane’s long involvement with rugby at Eltham began on the field, playing senior rugby from 1993–1996 and 1998–2001. He later returned to help shape the next generation, coaching junior teams from 2014 to 2018, passing on his love of the game with patience and quiet leadership.
But perhaps where Shane has made the biggest impact is in the places many don’t always see — the big days, the heavy lifting, the moments when the club truly needs hands.
Through GoPlay, Shane has played a major role in the Christmas Tree fundraiser, providing transport, storage and logistical support that has been absolutely essential to its success. He is also a reliable presence on bar service and large game days, stepping in whenever the club needs him most.

Our President, Tim Adams, describes it best:
“One thing that stands out about Shane is he has always been there when you need him. A major, major contributor to our Christmas tree sales through GoPlay. He turns out for bar service, big game days — basically whenever we need help most… on those big occasions, he is incredibly reliable.
On behalf of the club, many thanks for his years of service — not only as a player and a coach, but also as a 10-year committee member going into his 11th. Pretty impressive. Amazing.”
Shane is a true club stalwart — someone whose service has strengthened Eltham Rugby for generations of players and families.
On behalf of the entire club, thank you, Shane, for everything you have given and continue to give.
