VALE MAX BUSH
THURSDAY 29TH AUGUST FROM 1PM
Sadly, former teammates are encouraged to gather at the Club to remember and celebrate the life of Max Bush, a Yarra Valley Rugby Player in the mid 1970’s. Max’s legacy at the club, is one that will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Max was more than just a player; he was a cornerstone of the team. His dedication, sportsmanship, and passion for rugby were evident every time he stepped onto the field. In 1977 Max’s performance and leadership were acknowledged with The First XV Harry Nato (most courageous) Award. Max helped to shape the spirit and camaraderie of Yarra Valley Rugby Club that changed name that year to Eltham Rugby Union Football Club. His commitment to the game and his teammates was unwavering, and he inspired many with his tenacity and love for rugby.
Off and on the field, Max was known for his sense of humour. An example of this was recorded by Ken Smithies: ‘Another stylish win a month later against Dandenong took us to second place on the ladder, but that match was remembered more for flanker Max Bush’s comment to the referee before the game, along the lines of “Haven’t they retired you yet?”. Fortunately, the ref saw the funny side! ‘
No doubt his humour was tested by either Ken Smithies or Iain Aitken by a cartoon in the 2nd Edition of the club’s “Annual Annual”:
As we bid farewell to Max, he is remembered for his contribution to the foundation of Eltham Rugby. Max’s spirit will forever be a part of the club’s history, and he will be missed by all who knew him.
Rest in peace, Max.
