An unusual sight before the kick-off for Eltham’s Conference Competition match against Melbourne Chargers – despite the unavailability of four players due to injury, Eltham actually had a “bench”, as Reuben, AJ, Tomasi and the Stent brothers (Tim and Michael) from last year’s squad joined 25-season club evergreen Pete Maddalena in donning Eltham colours for the first time this season.
In an entertaining match, Eltham ran in 10 tries to run out 67-5 winners over a determined Chargers side, combining good support play in close with sweeping backline attacks.
Amongst many highlights:
- Samuela Rokoraivoka proving a handful for the opposition defence in making multiple line-breaks in a display of power running.
- A hat-trick to inside-centre Michael Stent, who claimed he didn’t pass to his brother Tim (outside centre) to score because he “hadn’t earned it”, or words to that effect.
- A great defensive effort across the Eltham line to deny the visitors during times when they dominated possession for extended periods.
- A side-line break by a one-legged Brodie Rigby before passing to Joe Thompson, who chipped ahead to gather and score.
- A fine goal-kicking display by Daniel Gannon.
