The U18s came away with a well-earned 32-27 win over the Harlequins at the Gala Day — and did it in proper Bridge Street mud-bath conditions.
From the coaches:
“The boys were keen as mustard. Both teams’ skill level was impressive under the conditions, and our coaching staff found we adapted better to them than our opposition. The entire game was an arm wrestle — we focused on getting points when in their half to keep scoreboard pressure.
We had some fantastic individual plays. Travis, loose forward, kicked ahead and out-passed his brother Trent — a winger — to fall on the ball and score. Impressive. Then our captain, Miah, following suit in the second half — just as good. Ben kicked well and made great decisions, as did our 10, Lui, and our back three in defence and on the counter.
We were overpowered in the scrum through the first half, but the lads focused harder on technique and we turned that around. The game stopped for around 5 minutes while one of the Harlequins players was stretchered off — but he was able to leave with his family afterwards, great news. We defended gallantly from our try line in the final minutes, and when the final whistle blew, we came away with the win.
A massive result from the lads. We need to keep building, working hard, training and improving — but this group has exactly the attitude to do that.”
