Russ Hurdle is one of Eltham Rugby’s most dedicated and long-serving volunteers — and his story is one that captures everything this club is about.
Born and raised in New Zealand, Russ picked up a rugby ball at the age of four and never really put it down. He played for Mount Maunganui, Arataki, and Pakuranga Rugby clubs before making the move to Australia, where a brief stint with Kiwi Hawthorn gave way to something far more lasting — a home at Eltham Rugby.
Russ has been part of the Eltham Rugby family for 13 years, spending 12 of those as a coach across both junior and senior teams. It was his son Ben taking up the game at four years old that first brought him to the sideline as a coach — and that same love of family and the game has kept him there ever since.
This season, Russ takes charge of the U18s. His focus is clear: develop the skills of these young players both on and off the field, and above all, make sure they love the game.
“Keep on developing their skills on and off the field — but most importantly, enjoy and embrace this great game.”
Ask Russ what he loves most about Eltham Rugby and he doesn’t hesitate: the community. The friendships. The family feel that keeps people coming back year after year.
His favourite rugby memory? Pulling on a jersey alongside his son Ben in a masters game — and he’s already counting down the seasons until Ben is old enough to run out together for the Eltham seniors.
One word for his coaching style? Passionate. No surprises there.
Welcome back, Russ. We’re lucky to have you. 🖤💛
