Eltham Shines at U18 State Regionals

Over six weeks of U18 State Regional trials and games, more than 130 talented young rugby players from high schools, colleges, and community clubs competed across four regions: North (Woorowoor), South (Waring), East (Treang), and West (Beek).

Three Eltham U18 players represented the East (Treang) region — Trent Murray, Travis Murray, and Ben Hurdle. All three worked hard and showcased their rugby talent throughout the trials. Trent and Ben were rewarded with selection in the final squad of 27. Unfortunately, Travis suffered a head knock in the very last play of the trials and missed selection, despite being deserving of a spot.

In the opening rounds, Treang went down to Waring but bounced back strongly with impressive wins over Beek and Woorowoor.

Heading into the final on Sunday, April 19, Treang faced Waring again, with redemption clearly on their minds. Over the course of the tournament, Treang had built strong team unity and confidence, entering the final as slight favourites.

The conditions were ideal — dry, firm underfoot, and temperatures in the low to mid-20s — perfect for open, running rugby.

Both teams started strongly, trading quality tries in the first half. The second half remained tightly contested, with the scoreline either level or within seven points. With about five minutes remaining, the scores were locked at 21–21, and extra time looked likely.

Waring mounted sustained pressure in the closing stages, attacking relentlessly for nearly four minutes. Treang’s defence held firm, but under pressure from a dominant Waring scrum, they were forced into a critical moment on their own try line. Winning a penalty, Treang chose not to kick for touch, wary of Waring’s strength in the set piece. Instead, they took a quick tap, moved the ball through multiple phases, and broke through to score under the posts — sealing a dramatic seven-point victory.

Eltham was proudly represented by Trent and Ben, along with Travis, who remained involved and supportive throughout the campaign. All three players gained valuable experience competing at a high level, built new friendships, and further developed their individual skills.

Well done to all involved.
